Bipolar Test

The main problem of treating bipolar patients stems from the difficulty of any bipolar test methodologies in correctly diagnosing the onset of bipolar disorders in people who shows symptoms of manic depression. It can take years of misdiagnosis and treatment with the wrong types of medication before a bipolar victim is verified to be suffering from manic depression with a bipolar test.

When a bipolar person is in the manic depressive state or simply feeling high, they seldom think that they are suffering from any illnesses and hence will not seek medical help. It is often when the depressive tendencies started showing up frequently that close by friends and family realize a problem and orders a bipolar test. However, only the depressive tendencies are more noticeable and bipolar patients are often diagnosed and mistreated as major depression patients using the wrong antidepressant drugs such as prozac. Because a proper bipolar test was not conducted, this may result in worsening the manic phrases of the mental illness when the bipolar patient swings into the hyperactive mania states.

Unlike other illnesses, there is no X ray or blood tests for detecting bipolar disorders. A bipolar test consists of the doctor asking the patient and family members a series of questions and observations of previous behavioral history. A typical bipolar test will try to detect and understand the following aspects of the patient's conditions. To help the doctor understand the seriousness and degree of bipolar disorder, you will be required to recall as accurate as possible when the manic-depression mood swings started and the frequency of the bipolar cycle. You may also be asked on your personal history and childhood because it is suspected that bipolar disorder can be caused by the family and growing environment. Sometimes lab tests will be ordered by the doctor, especially for patients that have been previously misdiagnosed as major depression patients and given only antidepressants for a long time. These lab tests will also detect the presence of hidden drug abuse which can be a possible cause of bipolar disorders. A detailed bipolar lab test will allow the doctor to correct and adapt the proper prescription drugs to control the bipolar symptoms.

For a greater understanding on the severity of the patient's bipolar conditions, the doctor may also interview the family and friends for their observations on the manic depressive patient's behavior at home and during work as part of the bipolar test. These will be cross referenced with the answers given by the patient for a more accurate insight into the bipolar disorders. Lastly, doctors will design a series of observation and mental tests to examine the behavioral patterns and mood swings of the bipolar patients. These bipolar tests also gauge the mental health stability of bipolar patients as well as their memory functions, emotional quotient, reasoning and thinking skills etc, to determine whether they are able to carry on working and live a normal life, or require immediate hospitalization and medical care until conditions improved.

Similar to the problems faced by pediatrics, it is especially difficult to correctly diagnose manic depression in children even with a bipolar test because they are less expressive, less cooperative or disobedient. Bipolar children may not understand their own medical problems well enough to communicate what is wrong with them and their mood swings are often interpreted by negligent parents as child tantrums. Without doing a proper bipolar test, they can be mistaken as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or psychosis.
